For Immediate Release

Gigi Mertle selected to lead Sonoma County Department of Child Support Services

SANTA ROSA, CA | October 02, 2025

The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors has selected Gigi Mertle as the new Director of the Department of Child Support Services, following her successful tenure as Interim Director.

Mertle has been with DCSS for nearly 13 years, where she has advanced through key leadership roles, most recently serving as Program Development Manager before stepping into the Interim Director position in June. Throughout her career, she has led strategic planning initiatives, overseen compliance and performance operations, and championed innovation through technology modernization and data-driven approaches.

“Gigi Mertle is a proven leader who brings both vision and compassion to her work,” said Supervisor Lynda Hopkins, chair of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors. “Her dedication to supporting families and her commitment to equity and innovation will ensure that our Department of Child Support Services continues to make a profound difference for families across Sonoma County.”

The Department of Child Support Services acts as a neutral third party to help parents establish paternity, locate noncustodial parents, set up and enforce child support orders, and make sure that children receive medical and financial support. In 2024, the department managed over 9,000 cases and distributed more than $30 million to support 13,100 children across the county.

In addition to her departmental leadership, Mertle has served on several county and state committees, helping advance innovative initiatives to enhance performance, service delivery and statewide collaboration. She also co-leads DCSS’s Employee Engagement Committee, reinforcing her focus on creating a positive and inclusive workplace culture.

Originally from Brazil, Mertle came to the United States to pursue higher education, earning a Master of Science in Educational Technology from Dominican University of California in 2006. Before joining DCSS, she held roles with the Sonoma County Office of Education and Banco Bradesco in Brazil.

Mertle succeeds Janeene de Martinez, who retired earlier this year. Her appointment reflects the County’s commitment to fostering strong, innovative leadership in public service.
